General Lamarre killed by a cannonball at the Mole Saint-Nicolas

Lamarre was a hero of the war of independence who had beaten the French general Neterwood at Leogane. After Dessalines was murdered he took the side of the republicans of the West and the South. Petion sent him north in 1807 to back the rising at Port-de-Paix; Christophe’s troops drove him out. He fell back on the Mole Saint-Nicolas and held it for three years under constant assault. On 10 July 1810 a cannonball killed him. They buried his body where he fell and sent his heart to Petion.
