Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, founder of Chicago, dies in Missouri

Jean Baptiste Point du Sable died on 28 August 1818. He is generally held to have been born in Saint-Domingue before 1750. In the 1780s he settled at the mouth of the Chicago River, and he is recognised as the first permanent non-Indigenous settler there, the founder of the city. The site is a National Historic Landmark at Pioneer Court.
