Iron market of Place Vallière inaugurated

Haitian

PUBLIC SQUARES. The town offers several public squares: the most important are those of Pétion, of the Intendance where the new Cathedral has been raised, of the Church, of Elie Dubois, of the Poste Marchand, of Vallière, on which the government of President Hippolyte had a superb iron market built, inaugurated on Sunday 22 November 1891, of Geffrard or of the Peace, of the interior and exterior Cemeteries, the Champ de Mars, the place St Louis, of the Customs House. The market square of the Church was the scene of an event unique in history: In 1802, a woman of color, Henriette St. Marc, accused of having sent munitions to the indigènes insurgents of the Arcahaie, was arrested and condemned to the penalty of death. Placed between two platoons of European carabineers, and led to the market square of the Church at 10 o’clock in the morning, followed by her coffin, in the presence of an immense crowd. A gallows was erected before her eyes. She mounted the scaffold with firmness.

Rouzier tells this under the entry PORT-AU PRINCE [le].
