Hervé Télémaque is born in Port-au-Prince, future star of narrative figuration

Hervé Télémaque was born in Port-au-Prince on 5 November 1937, into a bourgeois family with a poet uncle and a musician aunt. He left for New York in 1957 when Duvalier took power, studied at the Art Students League, and settled in Paris in 1961, where he became central to the figuration narrative movement. In 1964 he took up Hergé’s ligne claire; later he worked in assemblage and collage. France made him Commandeur de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1995.
