Jean Monestime becomes the first Haitian American on the Miami-Dade commission

On 2 November 2010 Jean Monestime won District 2 on the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners, beating the incumbent Dorrin Rolle in a runoff, 53 to 47. The district covers North Miami, Opa-locka, Liberty City and part of the City of Miami. He was later chosen unanimously as commission chairman, taking the post in January 2015.
