Haitians vote for mayors and local councils in a thin turnout

Haitian

On 3 December 2006 Haiti held municipal and local elections, the last stage of the cycle that had returned Rene Preval to the presidency that February. Voters were choosing 1,420 posts in all: CASECs and ASECs for the communal sections, town councils, and city delegations. Few showed up. These are the offices that touch daily life closest, and they are the ones Haitians have been given the least reason to trust.
