Haiti signs the United Nations Charter at San Francisco

On 26 June 1945 delegates of fifty nations signed the Charter of the United Nations in San Francisco, closing a conference that had run since 25 April. Haiti’s delegation was Gerard E. Lescot, Vely Thebaud, General Alfred Nemours and Andre Liautaud; Lescot signed for the country. Haiti had already been among the twenty-six governments that signed the Declaration by United Nations in 1942, and it became a founding member of the organisation. A republic born from a slave revolt sat at the table that wrote the charter of the postwar world. It would spend much of the next eighty years being administered by that same organisation.
