General Henri Namphy dies in exile in the Dominican Republic
Haitian
Henri Namphy died of lung cancer in the Dominican Republic on 26 June 2018. He was born at Grande-Riviere-du-Nord on 2 November 1932 and rose through the Forces Armees d’Haiti to general. When Jean-Claude Duvalier fled on 7 February 1986, Namphy took charge of the National Council of Government. On 29 November 1987 his soldiers and macoutes let gunmen shoot voters in the queue at Ruelle Vaillant and the election was cancelled. He handed power to Leslie Manigat in February 1988, seized it back by coup on 20 June, and was thrown out by his own soldiers on 17 September. He never set foot in Haiti again.
