Haiti holds the world’s first Day of Remembrance of the Slave Trade

On 23 August 1998 Haiti became the first country to observe the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. UNESCO chose the date for the night the Saint-Domingue rising began in 1791. Senegal followed at Gorée Island the next year. A UNESCO circular of 29 July 1998 had asked culture ministers to take the day up.
