Haiti holds its official ceremonies for the end of the American occupation

On 21 August 1934 Sténio Vincent’s government held the formal celebrations marking the end of the American occupation, opening with a Te Deum. The last visible American units had already gone about a week earlier. Sources disagree about which day the occupation actually ended — 1, 6, 15 and 21 August all circulate — and what this date fixes is the ceremony, not the departure. It had lasted nineteen years. Washington kept control of Haitian customs revenue for years afterward.
