Georges Biassou, first commander of the rising, dies in Spanish Florida

Georges Biassou died on 14 July 1801, aged sixty, at St. Augustine in Spanish Florida. With Jean-François and Jeannot he had led the insurrection of August 1791 in the North, and he was named a leader at the Bois Kayiman ceremony. He fought for Spain against the French, and later against Toussaint Louverture. He moved to St. Augustine in 1796 as general of the free black militia, and is buried at Tolomato Cemetery.
