Garrison of Fort Saint Joseph disarms the 3rd Colonial as the French land
Haitian
On 5 February 1802, when the French army landed at the Lamentin, the garrison of the fort had been won over by the citizens. The 3rd Colonial had fired on the French from the Place Vallière, and had withdrawn into the fort. The garrison let the soldiers of the 3rd penetrate into its midst; the latter, feeling no mistrust and believing themselves among brothers, suddenly saw the cannons trained on them, while the French, who were already encircling the fortification, ordered them to lay down their arms, which was done.
Rouzier tells this under the entry SAINT JOSEPH.
