Frederic Marcelin, a father of the Haitian novel, is born

Frederic Marcelin was born in Port-au-Prince on this day. He wrote novels, essays and journalism, and he ran the treasury: he was Secretary of State for Finance and Commerce, including under Nord Alexis in 1908. His novels Themistocle-Epaminondas Labasterre, La Vengeance de Mama and Marilisse put ordinary Port-au-Prince life on the page instead of borrowed French scenery. With Fernand Hibbert, Justin Lherisson and Antoine Innocent he is counted a father of the Haitian novel. He died in Paris on 10 January 1917, one day short of his sixty-ninth birthday.
