The army topples President Elie Lescot after a student strike

Elie Lescot lost power on this day. It started on 4 January, when his government shut down the journal La Ruche and the students of Port-au-Prince walked out. The strike spread, his cabinet quit on 10 January, and on 11 January the army took the palace. Power passed to a three-man Comite Executif Militaire: Colonel Frank Lavaud, with majors Antoine Levelt and Paul Eugene Magloire. Lescot was held under guard until 14 January, when he flew to Miami and then to Quebec.
