Former president Davilmar Theodore dies in Port-au-Prince

Haitian

Joseph Davilmar Theodore died in Port-au-Prince on this day, aged about 70. Born in Fort-Liberte in 1847, he built his career on the Cacos, the peasant fighters of the North who sold their guns to whoever wanted the palace. He forced Oreste Zamor out and had the National Assembly name him president on 10 November 1914. He lasted three months and eleven days. On 22 February 1915 Vilbrun Guillaume Sam’s troops reached the Cul-de-Sac plain and Theodore sailed for Curacao on a Dutch steamer.
