Fabre Geffrard is born, the president who would end Soulouque’s empire
Haitian
Fabre Nicolas Geffrard was born in September 1806 at Anse-à-Veau. He led the rising at Gonaïves in December 1858 that proclaimed the Republic and brought down Faustin Soulouque’s empire, then governed as president from 1859 to 1867. He signed the Concordat of 1860 that reopened relations with Rome, and promulgated the Rural Code of 1864. Wikipedia itself gives his birth as “19 or 23 September 1806” — the record has never settled it. This entry follows the 19th.
