Ertha Pascal-Trouillot was born at Pétion-Ville on 13 August 1943, ninth of the ten children of an ironworker and a seamstress. She took her law degree in 1971 and became the first woman judge in Haiti, and joined the Supreme Court in 1986. She served as provisional president from 13 March 1990 to 7 February 1991, and oversaw the election that brought Jean-Bertrand Aristide to power.
