Émile Jonassaint, the generals’ figurehead president, dies in Port-au-Prince

Émile Jonassaint died in Port-au-Prince on 24 October 1995, aged eighty-two. A jurist born at Port-de-Paix on 20 May 1913, he had been president of the Supreme Court from 1991 to 1993. The military installed him as de facto president from 11 May to 12 October 1994, after Aristide’s ouster.
