French republicans storm the fortified camp of La Tannerie

On this day General Etienne de Lavaux took the camp of La Tannerie, between Dondon and Grande-Riviere-du-Nord. The camp had been fortified for months by insurgent former slaves; Georges Biassou commanded there, with Toussaint Louverture as his second. Lavaux attacked with about 723 men, and the French colonists and free men of color of the North largely refused to march with him. The insurgents fell back on Dondon and Grande-Riviere. Prisoners taken in the pursuit were shot, including a free man of color called Coco-Laroche, who was wearing a marshal’s uniform and the cross of Saint-Louis.
