Duvalier promulgates the constitution of his first months in power

Haitian

On 19 December 1957 François Duvalier promulgated a new constitution, less than two months after taking office following the election of 22 September organised by General Kébreau. It abolished the Senate in favour of a single chamber, gave Kreyòl official recognition, and added a title on culture. Duvalier largely ignored it. It lasted six and a half years, until the president-for-life constitution of 1964.
