Desruisseaux fights Dessalines’s army before Grand-Goâve

Haitian

On the evening of 28 April 1800, the army of Dessalines left its camp at Bellevue, halted at Claville, then the next day at Chéridan, and on 1 May stood before Grand-Goâve. Colonel Renaud Desruisseaux went to meet it at the head of the 5th regiment of the South and, breaking through the vanguard of the North, routed it. Dessalines then gathered all his troops and hurled them against the Rigaudins. Renaud Desruisseaux vigorously withstood the shock of these innumerable masses, but he was struck by a bullet in the head. His battalion nevertheless made an honorable retreat, carrying off its chief, who did not cease giving orders. The 5th withdrew to the Grand-Goâve. Pressed on all sides, the Rigaudins destroyed all the fortifications of the village, which they abandoned after giving it to the flames. Dessalines entered the Grand-Goâve on 2 May and continued his march immediately. He halted on the Valué habitation.

Rouzier tells this under the entry Grand-Goâve (le).
