DECREE of the Conseil of the Cap, concerning the Poisoner MACANDAL and his Accomplices, and which orders the publication of the Edict of July 1682 on Poisons
HAVING SEEN by the Conseil the criminal trial conducted by extraordinary procedure and prepared by continuation of proceedings by the Lieutenant Criminel of the Cap, at the request of the Substitut of the Procureur Général du Roi, Plaintiff and Accuser, against one François Macandal, Defendant and Accused, prisoner in the prisons of this Town of the Cap, appealing from the Sentence rendered against him today by the said Lieutenant Criminel. By that Sentence he was declared duly attained and convicted of having made himself feared among the nègres, and of having corrupted and seduced them by sorcery, and made them give themselves over to impieties and profanations to which he himself would have given himself over, by mixing holy things into the composition and use of supposedly magical packets, tending to evil spells, which he made and sold to the nègres; and of having further composed, sold, and distributed poisons of every kind.
