Daniel Fignolé is born at Pestel, the steamroller of Port-au-Prince

Pierre-Eustache Daniel Fignolé was born at Pestel on 11 November 1913. A mathematics teacher, he became one of the most powerful figures of the years before Duvalier, able to put the working people of Port-au-Prince into the streets at a word — the woulo konpresè, the steamroller. He was a minister under Estimé and co-founded the Mouvement Ouvrier Paysan. Made provisional president in 1957, he lasted nineteen days before the army removed him. He died on 27 August 1986, five years after returning from twenty-nine years of exile.
