Council decides on a bronze statue of Dessalines at the Gonaïves

Haitian

One reads in the official part of the Moniteur of 8 March 1888, official journal of the Republic of Haiti: « It was decided in the Council of Secretaries of State, on the proposal of His Excellency the President of the Republic, that there shall be erected on the Place d’Armes of the Gonaïves, where the independence of Haiti was proclaimed on 1 January 1804, a bronze statue of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, founder of our national independence. The statue is being prepared at this moment, together with a monument which is being executed at the expense of President Salomon, and which will be placed in the inner cemetery of Port-au-Prince, over the tomb of the illustrious citizen. »

Rouzier tells this under the entry Gonaïves (les).
