Columbus dies in Valladolid and his remains later reach Santo Domingo

Haitian

After his brother the Adelantado had been dispatched to go and kiss the hands of the new Sovereigns, the gout of the Admiral grew worse by the hour, from the harshness of the winter, and more from the anguish of seeing himself so disconsolate and stripped of his rights, his services in such oblivion and his justice in peril, even though the news of the riches of these Indies was resounding and growing, much gold from this island going to Castile and much more being promised every day. Seeing himself very weak, he received with great devotion all the Holy Sacraments, as the Christian he certainly was, and when the hour came of his passage from this life to the other, they say that the last words he spoke were: in manus tuas, Domine, comendo spiritum meum. He died at Valladolid on Ascension Day, which fell that year on the 20th of May, in the year 1506. They carried his body, or his bones, to Las Cuevas of Seville, the monastery of the Carthusians; from there they were moved and brought to this city of Santo Domingo, and they lie buried in the main chapel of the cathedral church.
