A hurricane destroys the village of Bonaventure
Haitian
Bonaventure or Buenaventura. Village founded by Nicolas Ovando on the banks of the river Jayna for the working of the gold of that river. The commune comes under the province of Santo-Domingo. Oviedo speaks of a grain of gold he found there that weighed 3,600 piastres-gourdes, and of others of remarkable size. Bonaventure had a foundry where up to 230 thousand piastres-gourdes were struck each year. Between the Nisao and the Jayna stretches a vast and fertile plain that was formerly a rich source of prosperity for the region because of the gold found there. It is there that the village of Bonaventure was established, which a hurricane destroyed on 3 August 1508.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Bonaventure ou Buenaventura.
