Colard raises the cultivators of Jean-Rabel for Rigaud

Haitian

On 24 July 1799, while the army of Toussaint Louverture was occupied in fighting Rigaud at Grand-Goâve, at the beginning of the civil war, Etienne Colard, a native of Jean-Rabel, Lieutenant Colonel of the 9th Colonial, in garrison at Port-de-Paix, seconded by L. Bellegarde, raised the cultivators of Jean-Rabel in favor of Rigaud, and came to besiege the Môle. Maurepas resisted the incessant efforts of the insurgents. Moïse drove them from Port-de-Paix, whose siege he lifted. Golart entrenched himself at Jean-Rabel. Moïse pursued him there and took Jean-Rabel from him. Golart withdrew into rocky and inaccessible mountains, from which he came out only in 1802, at the arrival of the Leclerc expedition, after having nevertheless withstood, for three years, all the efforts of the troops of Toussaint-Louverture.

Rouzier tells this under the entry JEAN RABEL.
