Birot attacks and takes Tavet

Haitian

In 1799, during the civil war between Toussaint and Rigaud, Dessalines sent Colonel Nérette from Léogane to Tavet to support secretly the two band leaders Lafortune and Conflant, who had risen in insurrection against Beauvais at la Vallée and at Bainet. Nérette had entrenched himself well at Tavet. Birot attacked it on 5 August and took the position. Birot was wounded in the action. Instead of consolidating his conquest, he withdrew to Dénard. When Toussaint learned the result of the battle of Tavet, he exclaimed that Beauvais had also risen against the Republic. He reinforced his troops at Léogane and raised them to 25,000 men.

Rouzier tells this under the entry TAVET.
