Castera Bazile is born at Marbial and will paint a generation into being

Haitian

Castera Bazile was born at Marbial, in the Sud-Est, on 7 October 1923. Orphaned young, he was raised by his grandmother, who lived to a hundred, and schooled at the presbyteral school at Cochon-Gras. At eleven he went to Port-au-Prince to work rather than keep studying. He began painting in the 1950s and became one of the masters whose work shaped everything Haitian painting did afterwards.
