c. AD 1100 – 1200: Environmental analysis of the Governors Beach site on Grand Turk, specifically the study of tiger lucine shells (Codakia orbicularis), indicates that the site was occupied exclusively during the dry season. This seasonal timing suggests that the inhabitants were people from Haiti who traveled to the Turks and Caicos specifically for resource extraction when they were not occupied with primary agricultural cycles. The shallow archaeological deposits support this model of temporary, task-oriented habitation rather than permanent settlement. Such seasonal mobility highlights the strategic use of the smaller “out islands” by Greater Antillean populations to acquire specific prestige or subsistence goods.
