Alfred Auguste Nemours born, the Haitian who warned Geneva about Ethiopia

Alfred Auguste Nemours was born in Cap-Haitien on 13 July 1883, into a wealthy family; his father was Nemours Auguste. He was sent to a lycee in Paris and then to the military academy at Saint-Cyr. He served inside the occupation-era governments of Louis Borno, sat on the Conseil d’Etat from 1918, and was minister plenipotentiary in Paris from 1926 to 1930. He wrote the Histoire militaire de la guerre d’independance de Saint-Domingue in 1925. In 1935, speaking at the League of Nations as Mussolini’s troops invaded Ethiopia, he told the assembly to fear the day they would be someone else’s Ethiopia. He was elected President of the Senate in 1941 and died in Rome on 17 October 1955.
