Boyer enters Cap-Haïtien and makes the country one republic again

On 26 October 1820 Jean-Pierre Boyer entered Le Cap at the head of a strong army, ending a division of the country that had lasted more than twenty years. Christophe had shot himself on 8 October, and Boyer, president of the western republic since Pétion’s death in 1818, moved into the chaos. Generals who had conspired against Christophe were removed or killed at once. Boyer went on to rule until 1843 — the longest tenure any one man has had in Haiti.
