Boyer declares the Catholic Church’s property in Haiti to belong to the State

On 24 July 1824 President Jean-Pierre Boyer promulgated a law transferring the holdings of the Catholic Church in Haiti to the Haitian state. It is read as retaliation against the Archbishop of Santo Domingo, who had refused Boyer’s demand that he move his see to Port-au-Prince. Boyer had unified the whole island two years earlier. Church and state would not be regularised until the Concordat of 1860.
