Aristide lands in Port-au-Prince after seven years of exile

Haitian

On 18 March 2011 Jean-Bertrand Aristide stepped off a plane at Port-au-Prince after seven years in South Africa. He had been flown out of Haiti on 29 February 2004 in what he has always called a kidnapping. Washington asked him not to return. He returned anyway, two days before the presidential runoff between Mirlande Manigat and Michel Martelly, and thousands of people came to the airport to meet him. He spoke about the exclusion of Fanmi Lavalas from the ballot, then went home to Tabarre.
