Duvalier lays the first stone of Duvalierville at Cabaret

Haitian

On 21 July 1961 Francois Duvalier laid the first stone of Duvalier-Ville, on the site of the town of Cabaret north of Port-au-Prince. He handed the money-raising to Luckner Cambronne, then the deputy for Cabaret. Cambronne turned collection into a racket: deductions taken without warning from the paycheck of every state employee, and threats for anyone who hesitated. The model city was never finished. Cabaret took its own name back in 1986, after Jean-Claude Duvalier fled.
