A Pétion-Ville school collapses on its pupils and kills more than ninety

Haitian

The three-storey Collège La Promesse Évangélique fell at about ten in the morning on 7 November 2008. At least ninety-three people died, most of them children, and more than 150 were hurt. About seven hundred students attended, from kindergarten to high school. Filipino, Brazilian, Chilean and Ecuadorian peacekeepers dug through the rubble alongside Haitian police. The owner, Rev. Fortin Augustin, was arrested the next day; he had built it himself, without an engineer.
