A late hurricane drowns the Nord-Ouest and floods Gonaïves for two days

On the afternoon of 12 November 1909 a hurricane came ashore in northern Haiti, in the Nord-Ouest, with winds near 85 mph. More than twenty-four inches of rain brought catastrophic flooding and landslides across the country. At least 166 people died in Haiti, 150 of them in the Nord-Ouest. Gonaïves was entirely flooded for two days, and sixteen died when a bridge gave way.
