1794-May-18: Spanish authorities in Bayajá (Fort Dauphin) arrested a group of French people who were suspected of fomenting rebellion. The “Lista de los Franceses” included both white and colored individuals who were eventually shipped to Cuba as political prisoners. This mass arrest was part of a larger effort by the Spanish to purge their newly “conquered” territories of revolutionary elements. The prisoners were accused of maintaining correspondence with the French Republic and spreading “seditious” principles among the black auxiliary troops. This incident demonstrated the extreme measures taken by the Spanish to contain the revolutionary threat on the island of Hispaniola.
