1794-May: Spanish authorities in Fort Dauphin rounded up 110 political prisoners and shipped them to Havana to prevent the further spread of republican “maxims.” This group consisted of individuals from all racial backgrounds, including white “rabid republicans” and a majority of black and brown activists. Among those detained were the Flores brothers, described as determined to re-establish the Republic and oust the Spanish occupation. These ideological prisoners were branded as dangerous because their actions and expressions challenged the counter-revolutionary presence in Saint-Domingue. By placing these individuals in secure confinement, the Spanish administration attempted to quarantine the spirit of liberty that had begun to flourish in the urban centers.
