1767-Jan.-14: Sieur Alléon de Varcourt, a former navigator and engineer based in Paris, announced the discovery of a geometric method for calculating the diameter and quadrature of circumferences. He claimed the method was derived entirely from the elements of geometry and could produce results in less than an hour. To aid maritime travel, he completed forty quarters of reduction for degrees of longitude ranging from the equator to eighty degrees of latitude. This scientific advancement was presented as a significant benefit for navigation and the accuracy of maritime charts.
