1767-Jan.-14: Runaway slave notices from Saint-Marc highlighted the escape of a newly arrived man of the Congo nation branded “L RADOV” on his right breast. He was joined in flight by another man named Jason, who carried a brand identifying his owner and the port of Saint-Marc. These physical marks, including nation identifications like “Congo,” were the primary tools used by colonial authorities to facilitate capture. The persistent flight of both new arrivals and established laborers demonstrates the constant state of resistance within the plantation regime.
