1767-Jan.-14: Augustin, a 48-year-old mulatto man and Creole of Martinique, was reported as a runaway belonging to M. de la Martiniere in St. Louis. He was described as having a gray beard and eyes, sunken cheeks, and being marked by smallpox scars. Simultaneously, a young Creole woman named Rosalie, aged 14 or 15 and branded “SF” and “IG,” was listed as a fugitive from Boucan-neuf. These specific physical descriptions and brands were critical for the identification and capture of those resisting their enslaved status.
