1767-Jan.-07: An editorial reflection in the colonial gazette discussed the pessimistic historical outlook of the time, comparing the present era to an “iron age” rather than a “golden age.” The author argued that history primarily presents centuries of hardship, even when wealth and gold are highly valued and sought after. The year 1767 was predicted to be no exception to the mixture of good and bad events that define the natural order of human affairs. Readers were encouraged to hope that the sudden and extraordinary plagues that afflicted various countries in the previous year would be averted in the coming months.
