1767-Jan.-07: A young mulatto man named Louis was listed as a fugitive from the service of Mr. Dumas, an officer in the Quercy Regiment at Fort-Dauphin. He bore a brand on his right breast with the letters “DEGEN,” a physical marker of his status as property within the colonial military hierarchy. Military officers frequently held enslaved people for domestic service or logistical labor in Saint-Domingue’s garrison towns. His escape illustrates that resistance occurred even within the households of high-ranking colonial officials.
