1767-Jan.-07: Martin, an enslaved man of the Tiamba nation, was reported missing from the Dondon district and was identified by “M” brands on both of his breasts. He belonged to the plantation of Mr. Ganin, and his escape was broadcast to ensure his recognition by local patrols. The Tiamba nation was one of several West African groups whose members were systematically deported to Saint-Domingue for agricultural labor. These runaway lists provide detailed records of the ethnic identities and the physical labels imposed upon captives by their owners.
