1767-Jan.-07: Jacques, an enslaved man of the Congo nation, was reported as a runaway in the district of Fort-Dauphin. He identified himself as belonging to the estate of the late Mr. Mageau, who had worked as a tailor in the town. His notice, alongside many others, emphasized the pervasive nature of marronnage as a form of resistance against enslavement. Such public advertisements were the primary mechanism for colonial authorities to track and capture fugitive individuals.
