1767-Feb.-16: A significant forgery case was uncovered in the metropole involving a double engagement of 180,000 livres in the name of M. de Mory, Cashier of the India Company. The perpetrator, a former agent of M. de la Bourdonnaye, had successfully negotiated a counterfeit note so well-executed that Mory himself initially failed to notice the fraud. The crime was only discovered when the genuine note was presented and the cashier recalled having already paid the sum. News of such high-level financial crimes in the French capital was shared with Saint-Domingue residents to emphasize the need for commercial vigilance.
