1767-Feb.-16: An enslaved man named Antoine, of the Congo nation, was reported as a runaway in Cap-Français while wearing a long iron chain around his neck and foot. Despite the physical weight and visibility of these punitive restraints, he successfully fled from the service of M. Lagarde. His notice appeared alongside that of Charles, a man of the Mina nation, and Hypolite, a Mandingue man branded “AV CAP.” The persistence of flight even under the conditions of heavy mechanical coercion demonstrates the extreme resistance to the urban slave regime.
