1647: Insurrection aboard the Eendracht, bound for São Tomé (voyage 11353)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at São Tomé in 1647, the people aboard the Eendracht rose against the crew. They had been taken at Calabar.

The record gives the numbers as: 240 people were embarked; 155 were landed; 85 died on the crossing.

Captain: Meijnerts, Pieter. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “captured by Portuguese – after embarkation of slaves.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
