1641: Insurrection aboard the Zwarte Arend, bound for Pernambuco (voyage 11265)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Pernambuco in 1641, the people aboard the Zwarte Arend rose against the crew. They had been taken at Calabar.

The record gives the numbers as: 318 people were embarked; 238 were landed.

Captain: Cornelisz, Cornelis. Flag: Netherlands. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “sold slaves in Americas – subsequent fate unknown.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
